Most business owners have a sense, perhaps a wish, about the value of their business. Most often there is little correspondence between this "notion" of value, and what ready and willing buyers will pay for your company.

There is a ton of information on the web about how to value your business, and some of those techniques make sense and will apply to your business. But instead of trying to determine the value of your own business, your best bet is to get an outside determination.

Similar to selling your house.... You may have a number that you'd like to get, but a Realtor can help you see what is realistic, based on comps and based on the market conditions when you ready to sell.

Most brokers also just look at your house, and your business "as is" and that's a shame.

Because with a little work, thought and preparation, and a little time, you can make your business worth more.

Again, similar to real estate, a broker isn't going to recommend a lot of changes that can increase your value - rather they want to earn the listing, get your house on the market, and earn their commission.

Most 'accounting' methods of determining your business value undervalue the importance of intangible assets:

     * your customer list and these most important relationships,

     * your business processes,

     * your team and their expertise,

     * the Sales & Marketing tools that bring you new business,

These assets are harder to determine from a strict accounting methodology.
